Introduction
There are different concepts of magic and in this article I will be looking specifically at two of them; magic in relation to sorcery or witchcraft as a means to control the natural world through mystical means and also magic as a performance art often referred to as illusion.
The word Magic can be broken down to include several definitions, both of which can be applied into magic as witchcraft and magic as illusion:
Magic involves natural forces that cannot be detected by science.
Magic involves intervention of spirits.
Magic is a mystical power.
Magic involves the manipulation of the elements.
Magic involves the manipulation of energy.
Magic uses the manipulation of symbols.
Although in witchcraft these definitions are claimed to be precise i.e. spirits really do intervene in any practice of spellcasting etc, in illusion magic these principles are bent to seemingly give the appearance that they are true i.e. an illusion is created where the audience is fooled into believing that a spirit has intervened in the act.
